What's involved

Clean, prep, seal

Concrete is porous. Left bare, it soaks up water, oil and dirt, and mould gets a hold in the shady spots. A sealer fills or coats that surface, so stains sit on top where they can be cleaned off.

  1. Step 1: Check the surface

We look at what's there: bare concrete, coloured concrete, or an old sealer that's worn, peeling or gone white. That decides whether it's a clean and seal, or whether the old coat has to come off first.

  2. Step 2: Pressure clean

The concrete is pressure cleaned to get the dirt, mould and loose material out of the surface. Sealer only works on clean concrete; seal over grime and you lock the grime in.

  3. Step 3: Repairs

Cracks are filled before sealing, so the seal goes over a sound surface and water can't keep getting in underneath it.

  4. Step 4: Seal

The sealer goes on once the concrete has dried out: clear to protect and bring up the colour that's already there, or tinted to add colour and even out patchy concrete.

  5. Step 5: Cure

It's kept clear while it cures. We'll tell you when it's right to walk on and when it's right to drive on for your job.

This driveway had lost its coating in blotchy patches. After a clean and a fresh seal it reads as one even colour again, garage door to kerb.

Coloured concrete

Sealing suits concrete that's in decent shape but starting to look dull, patchy or grubby, and concrete that's never been sealed and keeps staining. Coloured concrete gets the most out of it, because the sealer is what keeps that colour from washing out in the sun.

Driveways get oil and tyre marks, paths and patios get mould and dirt in the shady spots, and both are much easier to clean once sealed. If the surface also needs a new colour, the sealer can be tinted to do it in the same job.

If your driveway is pebblecrete or exposed aggregate, that's its own job with its own sealer. See pebblecrete sealing. For a stencilled driveway that's faded badly, re-colouring is usually the better fit.

Common questions

Concrete sealing, straight answers

Anything not covered here, call 0438 708 830 and ask.

Do I really need to seal my concrete driveway?

Not always, but sealed concrete is easier to keep clean and holds its colour better. A sealer helps keep oil, dirt, water and mould out of the surface. Coloured concrete fades much faster without one; plain concrete in good condition can go without.

What's the difference between clear and tinted concrete sealer?

A clear sealer protects the concrete and brings up the colour that's already there; a tinted sealer adds colour and evens out patchy concrete. The driveway in the before-and-after on this page went from blotchy patches to one even colour.

How can I tell if my concrete needs resealing?

Pour a little water on it: if it soaks in and darkens the concrete quickly, the sealer has worn through. Other signs are dull, patchy colour, mould coming back in the shady spots, and stains that won't wash out.

Can you seal concrete that already has an old sealer on it?

Often, yes, but it depends on what's there. A sound old sealer can usually be cleaned and recoated; one that's peeling, flaking or gone white needs to come off first, or the new coat lifts with it. We'll look at it before we quote.
