What's involved
Clean it out, fill it
Every crack is a way in for water. It washes out what's underneath the slab, the edges start to break up, and weeds and roots move in. Filling a crack early is a much smaller job than dealing with a broken slab later.
-
Step 1: Look at the crack
First we work out what kind of crack it is. A fine shrinkage crack, a crack along a joint, and a crack where one side has dropped are three different problems, and only some of them are fixed with a repair.
-
Step 2: Open and clean it
The crack is cleaned out of dirt, weeds and loose concrete, and opened up where needed so the filler can get a proper grip on both sides.
-
Step 3: Fill
It's filled with a repair product suited to the crack and where it is: a driveway that takes car weight, a path, or a slab.
-
Step 4: Finish and seal
The repair is finished off level with the surface. If the driveway is being re-sealed or re-coloured as well, the seal goes over the top and the repair blends in further.
What it suits
When a crack needs fixing
Some cracking is normal. Concrete shrinks as it cures and moves with the heat and the ground under it, which is why driveways have joints cut into them. Fine cracks are common and mostly cosmetic, but they're still worth filling before they let water in.
Cracks to get looked at sooner are the ones that are wide, getting longer, letting weeds through, or where one side is higher than the other. Those are the ones that become trip hazards and broken edges.
Crack repairs are often done as part of a bigger job: before a driveway is re-sealed or re-coloured, or before an epoxy flake floor goes down in a garage or shed. They can also be done on their own.
A crack that keeps moving because the ground underneath is moving, or a slab that's dropped or lifted, needs more than filler, and we'll say so rather than patch over it.

Concrete crack repairs, straight answers
Anything not covered here, call 0438 708 830 and ask.
Are cracks in a concrete driveway normal?
Some cracking is normal. Concrete shrinks as it cures and moves with temperature and the ground underneath it. Fine cracks are common; cracks that are wide, growing, or have one side higher than the other are worth getting looked at.
Will a repaired crack in my driveway be invisible?
Not completely. A filled crack is sealed against water and blends in much better, especially once the driveway is re-sealed over the top, but you'll usually still be able to find it if you look.
What happens if I leave a crack in my concrete?
It usually gets worse. Water gets in and washes out the base under the slab, the edges break up, and weeds and roots find their way in. Filling it early is a much smaller job than fixing a broken slab later.
Can every concrete crack be repaired?
No. A crack that keeps moving because the ground underneath is moving, or a slab that has dropped or lifted, needs more than a filler. We'll look at it and tell you honestly whether a repair will do the job.
Do cracks need repairing before a driveway is resealed?
Yes. Sealing over an open crack just lets water keep getting in underneath the new coat, so cracks are filled first and the seal goes over the repair. That's why crack repairs are part of most restoration jobs.
